March 22nd and 23rd....GRAND SLAM!

D.A. HUGHES BACHELOR WEEKEND, 2 BLUES, 2 STRIPEY'S, 9 SAILFISH

Jasen Gast, Will Hughes, Zac Henderson, DA Hughes, John Saunders and Matt White

March 22nd and 23rd we welcomed the above crew in for 2 days of fishing on ALLURE and D.A. Hughes "Despedida Soltero".......Bachelor Party weekend. First morning after running 15NM out to the western side of the pocket we had the lines in the water for about 10min when a blue marlin crashed the right bride teaser.  The fish teased in nicely, DA had the bait back there and we got a great bite on the pitched mackerel, after coming tight he soon released a blue of about 220lb on the 50lb stand-up......

Jasen on the leader with DA's seriously lit up blue

Way to start the trip DA!!! We fished the area for about an hour though with the amount of boats in the area the bite seemed slow so we pushed off out wide. The guys are all experienced Gulf Coast blue water fisho's and it showed going 4 for 4 on the sails out there and Matt boating this good eating size mahi...
                                                 DA, Matt and dinner.

The boats that stayed closer inshore worked away all day and released anywhere up to 8 sails though out wide on the drop off we saw birds and bonito's working and things looked good despite only raising 5 sails out there.
Next morning we had a late start and on the run out to the drop off were diverted by a group of spinners up on the flats in about 400ft of water. A quick troll past revealed little and on the way out to the edge we soon had Will doing a great job getting the bite from a stripe marlin that hit the two left teasers before dropping back to the rigger bait, the fish fought hard and after about 10min on the rod Will got the release.
Will's stripe marlin of about 90lb

Working the area we raised 3 sails and released 1 from 2 bites before we had another stripey in the spread, after moving from teaser to teaser DA got the bite on the pitched ballyhoo bait. Again, great work had him come tight and he made short work of this 80 odd lb stripey releasing him in no time. Another good start to the day and for Guatemala the hard ones out of the way early when thinking of a slam. With that in mind we worked out to the edge releasing one more sail before approaching one of the steeper drops along the bank and raising the one we were looking for, the blue crashed the right bridge teaser, came in hot and after a few seconds of DA having the mackerel in the spot he got the bite, came tight and we were on......

A tough, solid 250lb fish and after about 20min we got the tag in and let it go. Congrats DA! Grand slam on ALLURE, we've had our chances in the past though this was a first for the boat so nice going. For the rest of the afternoon we saw plenty of free jumping sails and had 4 hot teaser fish come in releasing 3 of them with one going ballistic and throwing the hook as it charged back at the boat. Day's end 1 blue, 2 stripeys and 5 sails. Great fishing guys, missing only one bite in 2 days. The crew were tricked out with Go-Pro cameras and DA put this short clip together, worth a watch!!

The sail bite out there is still a bit slower than average though we did see plenty of jumpers and the bite could turn on at any time. The good news is the blues have started to show up with several released among the fleet in the last few days and the water temperatures seem to be slowly coming back to normal for the most part. I still think April is going to be a great month down here and into May for both the sailfish and the marlin bite. We have opening's in April and then again into May. In reality the fishing is good here right through end of August so if anyone has any plans get in touch and we'll do our best to get you on them.....

Fishing through March 18th 2013

Ryan Dornak, Brian Christensen,Andre Feucht, Stephen Cyphers, Craig Jones,  Kyle  Krammer, Greg Shannon and Chief Tauzin
March 17th-18th we fished out of Texas and Colorado the 2 boat group experienced some pretty good fishing with 62 sailfish raised, and 37 releases from 49 bites, pretty good averages with the majority of the group being their first time blue water fishing and having a go at pitching baits to the fish coming in on the teasers. A few screw ups though good times and plenty learnt with the guys having a blast trying. The past week or more the fish had been very funky, coming in on teasers though disappearing just as quick, the last couple of days was good to see a change in their attitudes with some good teaser bites.
The Colorado crew with one of 6 double headers for the trip.

March 15th Hill Dishman was back in Guate this time with now regular Dan Wheat and their good friend Jay  Hanna. As mentioned above the fish were extremely spooky with plenty of fish coming in on the teasers only to disappear. Then the ones that did bite seemed to drop the baits after biting, making for some frustrated anglers, especially if you're learning and doing everything correctly. Despite this we ended up with 44 sails raised, 37 bites and 20 releases, we also raised 2 blue marlin both of which came into the spread though neither eating and a couple of mahi's to about 25lb's. Out wide on our last day we found a huge foamer of bonito and tried live baiting with no luck, though what a sight....
Dan Wheat, Jay Hanna and Hill Dishman
                                                     Dan with dorado
Hill fighting a sail around huge school of bonito

March 12-14th we welcomed for their first time to Guatemala the Jeff Scott group. Jeff and Lesley Scott brought his family out from Ohio for their first trip out on the briney. The fishing these days was a bit slower than average though they did well with the opportunity's they had......
Jason Kinder, Lesley, Nola, Dianne Kinder, Kurt and Jeff Scott

The same problem with finiky fish in the spread though we did get some nice ones with dad Kurt taking out the biggest fish honors with this large sail.......
                                                         Kurt Scott

The group ended up from the 32 sailfish raised, 15 releases from 25 bites as well as over 20 mahi's on the last day out and jumping off a 30+lber.
Jeff and Lesley with a double header
And Jeff, with the results, another nice one.......
We had a good time fishing with the Scott's and hope to see them back here in the future, they had nothing but high praise for their time on the boat and at the OASIS........

Hannah and Amanda Thompson with Karly and Steve Brackman and Abagail Thompson
March 10th-11th we fished with Amanda Thompson and her daughters Abagail and Hannah with Steve and Karly Brackman. Amanda has fished some the top spots in the world for some of the biggest fish around and came to Guatemala to practice her bait and switch techniques for an up-coming summer trip to the Cape Verde Islands with her fishing mentor Steve. The fish were just starting their funkiness though we did manage to find some pretty good teaser fish the last day out and Amanda fished well with some great averages releasing 17 from 22 bites. We hope the practice comes in handy for the up-coming trip and good luck out there and then again on the reef in October.
                                            The Chuck Miller group
Fishing 2 days March 7th and 8th the fishing was a bit slow though we did get into some nice mahi's, released 7 sailfish from 13 bites and a blue marlin pushing the 300lb mark.

Out there right now the water temperature is slowly coming back to normal and the last couple of days out saw some pretty good fishing, things look like they are on the up swing. We have some openings in April and through May and I expect the fishing will get good........

FISHING REPORT 7 MARCH 2013

Chuck Miller with his blue marlin of around 300lb's tagged and released on the 50lb stand-up. The blue marlin bite has been a bit slow till now though we broke one off on Saturday on the 30lb and there was another caught that day with a few more being seen among the fleet since then. We're hoping to start seeing a few more from here on in...
Today we fished with Chuck Miller, Mike Treet, Max McLain and Ken Victorick from Midland, Texas. The sail bite was a little slow and we started to the east of where the few sails were being picked up. Chuck started the day with this nice 30lb mahi....
And ended the day with his blue marlin, in between we raised 5 sailfish and released 2 from 4 bites. We are back out again tomorrow with the guys and hope to have some better sail action....

March 3rd-4th we fished with the Steve Scribner group.....
L-R Chip Smith, Rick Davis, John Landon, BillySned and Steve Scribner
On our first day out we felt the effect of a large cold front that had rolled down from the US, this was a pretty nasty one with 8ft seas and the occasional 9-10ft waves coming through. Not that much fun to be in, short sharp waves so we pulled the pin at around 1030 and tried a bit of inshore fishing. The next day out, Monday the 4th was a bit better and we worked hard to release 4 sailfish from 6 bites. The guys had a great time down here despite the tough conditions and relatively slow fishing.....

February 28th through March 2nd we welcomed back to Guatemala the Chris Adams group, it had been 4 years since we last fished with them so it was great to catch up again.
L-R, Dean, Faith and Mary Hope Mortenson, Mitch Johnson, Chris Adams and Andy Johnson

In the first 2 days we had great weather, flat seas and good fishing with 33 sails raised 29 bites and 20 sails released.
Mitch and Chris with a nice one
Our last day out Dean, Mary Hope, Faith and Mitch headed up to Antigua for the day while Andy and son-in-law Chris went offshore, the start of the cold front saw a confused sea and the sail bite that we were on the day before dried up, we ended up with 2 sailfish released from 3 bites and Chris had on a blue marlin of around 150lb's on the 30lb that went crazy on us, after several jumps the fish did a quick circle and cut through the main-line, 30lb test. Unlucky for Chris though that;s fishing.....

We are expecting things to pick up once the weather gets back to normal and the seas get a chance to lay down. With the stiff ENE winds a fair amount of top warmer, blue water was blown away. We are fishing everyday through next week so more reports to follow. I'm picking April to be a great month as well, we have openings....
