FISHING, MAINTENANCE & COUNTING DOWN.....

Counting Down to New Season

Flashback to last October, good sailfish AND blue marlin bite...

We are in the middle of maintenance here in Guatemala with Allure II out of the water getting some cosmetic surgery and down at the Lodge regulars will notice several improvements all round. We'll be back up and running for our first group of the new season coming in on October 14th. Last October right through December we had great fishing with plenty of sails and the blue marlin bite was also very good. To coincide with this we have teamed up with Cam Sigler Jr this November and plan to host Bluewater Flyfishing Workshops where you can learn all there is to know about catching sailfish, blue marlin, mahi and tuna on the fly. We'll be giving full instruction on the boat and you'll learn everything from the tease to casting and how to fight these awesome fish on the fly. With the amount of marlin around traditionally in November there is also a very good chance of shot at a blue on the fly. These fish are the ultimate!! In the evenings Cammy will be teaching everything from tying tube flies, IGFA regulations to all the knots from the snell to the bimini and huffnagal knots that connect the shock leader to the class tippet. A great opportunity to experience the best bill fishing around and learn from the best in the business.

Get in touch with us for all the information needed to get aboard. It'll be great mate! We are starting to book up pretty solid through the season so don't leave your enquiries too late. For big groups we are again teaming up with the 43ft Capt Hook with Capt Eddie Bairez, 37ft Makina with Capt Junaga and 37ft Intensity with Capt Mike Shedder as our back up boats.

To the fishing the past while.....

 BEAVER & GROUP
Beaver and Joanie
Back on May 8th we hosted Beaver and his group who were down at the OASIS for the week while working with LIVING WATER drilling a much needed water well for a school in the Masagua area about 30mins from Puerto San Jose. On their last day down here we took them out for a much deserved day of fishing on ALLURE II. They had a great time all getting into a few sailfish with 19 raised and 9 releases from 15 bites. Kudos to this group for helping out a much needed area...

CHRIS AND JEFF BLACK

May 23rd and 24th we hosted father and son team from Houston, Chris and Jeff Black for their first trip to Guatemala. They were keen to try the fly and over the 2 days of fishing 24 sailfish were raised on the teasers and from 18 bites 9 sailfish were released. We had a great time with them and Look forward to fishing again with them.

JON HAAS from HOSS OFF THE GRID
May 28th and 29th we welcomed Jon Haas from Oregon to film a series for his fishing show HOSS OFF THE GRID. The fishing was a little tough by Guatemalan standards though we still got into some fish and some epic footage for his show. Over 2 days of fishing on the fly we raised 10 sailfish and Jon did and excellent job on the flyrod releasing 6 out of 7 bites! On his second day he went 100% releasing 4 from 4. That is awesome fishing making the most of his opportunities.

ALAN AND WILL FOURNIER.
June 9th and 10th I fished father and son team Alan and Will Fournier. The first day was a little slow fishing the bottom of the pocket, we raised 4 sailfish and released 3 from 4 bites, we also had 2 blue marlin in the spread though neither of them switched to the pitched mackerel. Second day we ventured out wide on the west side of the pocket and found a great afternoon bite with 17 sailfish raised and 10 releases from 16 bites, the last fish released for the day was nice blue marlin of around 250lb.

AMANDA THOMPSON ON THE FLY

June 18th through 24th we welcomed back Amanda Thompson who has the blue marlin on the fly bug! We fished 7 days with her on Allure II specifically targeting blue marlin on the fly. We had a rod set up for sailfish though if they didn't tease all the way in aggressively we didn't try too hard re-teasing or working sailfish areas. It was blue marlin we were after. We had a great trip with her raising 14 blue marlin and casting to 12 of them, a few didn't switch to the fly and a couple of half bite/swipes though we had 6 good bites and hook-ups. Unfortunately this time around the luck wasn't with us. A couple of these blues were in excess of 300lb, brutes on a flyrod! One of the big fish she fought for just on an hour and I thought our chances were good when the fish went down deep, out along horizontal, then came up from the deep jumping about 250+ mtrs away. Despite being in complete freespool with the big belly in the line the 20lb tippet parted. The same thing happened on another and a 3rd parted when the tippet was bill damaged. With the other 3 we survived some long blistering greyhounding runs and seemed to be in good shape only for the hooks to pull......that's the nature of blue marlin on the fly. In the meanwhile we also raised 94 sailfish, mixing it up having a crack at a few on 4lb & 6lb tippet and 20lb for practice. Good times and great angling by Amanda we really looking forward to trying again with her....Check out the short vid of the tease and bites on the fly, nothing like it!

The quality is not that great on the blog, check:

STEINHAGEN/THORPE FATHER AND SON TRIP
L-R, Landon, Harvey and Dane Steinhagen with Colby and Curtis Thorpe.
June 28th -29th it was great to see Harvey and Curtis back down at the OASIS, this time bringing their sons for a Guatemalan experience. The guys started their trip with 18 holes at the wonderful La Reuninon Golf course on the way down to the coast.
Dane, Colby and Landon
Another crew keen on the fly we tried hard though the sailfish bite had dropped off some. Over the 2 days of fishing 16 sailfish were raised and final count was 5 releases from 11 bites. We also got into a couple of tunas for the guys. We had a great time with them on the boat and back at the lodge and are looking forward to their return  trip later in the year....
Dane with sashimi
And Landon with a nice sail about to be released.

And always good to get feedback, this from Harvey....

We had a such great time on our quick run down to the West Coast and we’ll be back again when the fishing heats-up later in the year. With that, please also thank Liz so much for her personalized great hospitality the wonderful accommodations and food at the Lodge, it was a wonderful time, and we all thank you so much.
