April 25th and 26th El Jefe Craig Johnson flew down for a couple of days of fishing with good friends Jimmy Bynum from Nashville and Jeff Tucker from Houston along with pilots Goose and Scott. First day, out about 35NM we got into some good sailfish action from the get go with a triple header right off the bat! From there on in we had a good steady bite with 35 sails raised and 18 releases from 30 bites. Some funky fish out there coming up on teasers, not switching to the baits and fish biting and dropping the baits though still a great day on the water and a good introduction to billfishing Guatemala style for Jimmy and Jeff...
With plenty of bills under the belt the request our next day out was for some meat fishing so we headed west of the sailfish bite of the previous day hunting for mahi-mahi or tunas. At about 30NM we struck the mahi jackpot with a small current line holding some trash and small logs, the area was loaded with bait, small bonito's, plenty of small mahi's and some XOS bulls as well. We trolled the area catching some good eating size and then live-baited small bonito's having a blast on some big bull's to 50lb. Tough SOB's as well with every fish giving the guys good work-out on the 30lb tackle....
Scott, Jimmy, Jeff, Craig and Goose with the morning haul.
Working the area till after midday we ran out wide to the drop looking for spinners and released 2 from 3 sailfish bites out there before running back into the area where we had the awesome mahi action to finish off the day. Once again we got into some bite's, missing one big one and Craig Johnson finished off the day with this beauty.....
Another great day on the water and plenty of mahi fillets to take back home for the guys. The boats that went back to the area where the sailfish bite was got into them again as well releasing up to 19. The weather was perfect, the water deep blue with plenty of bait and jumpers seen on the run out, it is all looking good for the fishing to stay on and we are picking May through August to be very good fishing months.
In the last 9 fishing days on ALLURE we have released 157 sailfish, one blue marlin and boated plenty of big mahi's, this is traditionally a great time of year with plenty of variety with tuna and marlin making more of a showing. If you're thinking about it, just do it, we can offer some great summer deals and we'll get you on to some fishing you'll remember.....
Jeff Tucker has fished the Eastern Pacific from Cabo San Lucas to Costa Rica, here's what he had to say about his 2 day's down here:
Thank you Kiwi, Nick and all the staff at Sailfish Oasis for the finest two days of fishing in my life. I will never forget this. Jeff Tucker, April 27th.
